Sydney Tower / AMP Building, Sydney
Whether its 300 metres in the air, or on the harbour floor, getting equipment in to
awkward
places is all in a day’s work for Inter-Chillers.

Sydney Tower
When Westfield decided to replace the ageing chiller serving
the turret of Sydney Tower, Inter-Chillers were asked to
provide a solution. The answer was a 740 kWR Hitachi
chiller taken to the plant room piece by piece and re-assembled.

In 2007 Inter-Chillers were approached to supply and install
a supplementary condenser water system at AMP Sydney Cove.
Its purpose was to act as a backup to the original sea water condenser system. This involved structural steel, cooling towers, heat exchangers, variable speed pumps and controls.
The client was so impressed with the result that we were
engaged this year to replace the original sea water pipework and
to re-locate the pump room from the harbour foreshore to
the building proper. Next on the list are repairs to the submerged
pipework within the harbour followed by a new DDC system to
control the entire chiller system.

During the winter of 2005, Inter-Chillers carried out a Turbocor retrofit to an R-12 Trane CVGA centrifugal chiller.
Three Turbocor TT300 compressors were fitted to the existing chiller vessels after the old drive train was removed and the integrity of the vessels and tubes was proven. The major benefit of this retrofit was the huge electrical savings made in reduced running costs. An additional benefit was the retrofitting from R-12 to R-134a refrigerant.
A most satisfactory result for all parties when you consider that it would have been virtually impossible to fit a new chiller due to the plant room location.

The new cooling towers for the Marriott Hotel had to be
carried to the roof by hand and assembled in position
once the old timber tower was demolished.

Sofitel Hotel, Brisbane

In 2006, Inter-Chillers instigated the manufacture and subsequent installation of the world’s first split vessel PowerPax chiller on the 28th floor plantroom of this hotel.
This challenge was brought about by tight plantroom access and the building’s surrounds, which precluded the use of cranage during the chiller replacement. It was necessary to cut up the old centrifugal chiller and rig it out of the plantroom, largely by manual methods.
Installation of the new PowerPax chiller was made possible by the split vessel construction, which allowed the machine to be delivered in knocked down form, installed and re-assembled on site.
This successful project was made possible by the flexible approach of the chiller manufacturer, Boronia Technologies, the expert project installation by our Queensland business partner, Four Seasons Air Conditioning and the vision and supervision of the Inter-Chillers project design and management team led by Howard Davies.

Australian Embassy, Beijing, China

For the third year running Inter-Chillers has been requested by the Embassy's facility management company, United KG, to carry out the annual maintenance and related repairs
to the chillers servicing the main building's air conditioning plant.
The logistics involved in providing these services so far from our base can be somewhat daunting, however to achieve a satisfactory outcome and successful implementation, careful planning is the key. Projects such as this often require the involvement of many members of the administration, managerial and supervisory teams to co-ordinate a complete and
successful project delivery.
Something we are proud of at Inter-Chillers is the willingness of all staff to “Have a go” and
not be bound by the traditional operational parameters associated with our industry. Our company culture is to encourage open thinking, as a consequence of this, we often take on projects that others think are too difficult or even impossible, this coupled with our willingness to listen and learn is a large part of our success.

Stockland Shopping Centre, Jesmond
The Stockland shopping centre at Jesmond had two (DX) cooling plants at the end of their service life. Inter-Chillers was appointed to replace these plants with a new chilled water plant. The challenge was getting the equipment in and out of the plant rooms as they are located in the middle of the complex. Our Key Performance objectives were:
- public safety and compliance with OH&S systems;
- minimal inconvenience/disruption to the local residents, businesses, employees and patrons;
- to confine any noise to daytime hours.
The lifting was safely completed over two nights with no complaints and the new plant was brought into service early September, 2009.
